Here is a cool site that allows you to design your own package. I can't really read what it says, but it's not hard to understand and follow the navigation and instruction. Recommend using full screen to view this site.

LIVE FROM THE TENDERLOIN

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/12/06/BANM14ITI9.DTL

Take a look at Adam's Block. He lives at 250 Taylor and has a web cam in his window. Actually web cams in two windows. He's doing his part to keep an eye on the loin from his little perch in SF. Take a look at his site:

http://adamsblock.com/

It's a very simple site that you all can do yourselves in a matter of weeks. Go to "View" in the menu of your browser and view "Page Source". See how the page is coded. It's a great way to learn. The Live cams are Swfs. Enjoy. -Jon

Most of you are too young to remember this decade. Damn you all! (I say in the most loving way) This is a good example of what you can do online. It's an experience. An experience of a time when a man said "pity the fool" and cars talked. Notice the option to post to Facebook. Something to always consider. Tune in and have fun. (Note: Adjust the reception by moving the antennae. -Jon

Volkswagen builds a living and breathing site, literally.

It's a cool site from VW. About the contents, it's just a site that introduces you a car. I really like the way that they use people with card boards to show all the navi and images. But the time for loading is too long.

http://www.hasbro.com/risk/flash_world.cfm

Cool site. You can play some interesting mini games on it. It's nice that it creates a small world for all buttons. The animations and the way how it uses the spray paint to be the preloader are nice. The boss and wife buttons at the right bottom corner are hilarious. - Michael

This is a great example of agencies using the internet to distribute commercials. The great thing about Youtube is that you can see how many people viewed your ad. It's something that's hard to do with TV or broadcast media buys. -Jon

He says you can be in the movies just like him thanks to Xbox 360. Burt, hate to break it to you, but Smokey and the Bandit was a very long time ago. Anyway, this site has a very simple, yet cool, interface and has a very intuitive nav. Best of all you can explore the space and find some easter eggs. If you guys don't know, easter eggs are those hidden surprises inside your site. They can simply make a noice when rolle-over, or they may take you to a new page. Have a look around. You're all movie stars in me and Joe's eyes. Ta ta. -Jon

Heinz Wants You To Seduce A Plant

Someone needs to sweet talk this site to make it more interesting. I really want to like it. It an unexpected idea (By the way you could have done this for Long's). This experience is way way too slow for my taste. You see, I have the attention span of a fly. I simply moved on after a few minutes. Not the impression you want. What do you guys think? -Jon

AT&T Is All Thumbs

Agency: Atmosphere BBDO

The URL naming really had me excited, but then the site loaded and sense of disappointment came over me. The name of the site is a better idea than the actual site. Never a good thing. What I do like about this site is the user interface. How you enter your information and interact with the "sphere" graphic. I also like the interface where your enter your definition. This is a good example for you guys in that respect. Let me know what you think of this site. Your thumb is for more than just sucking. -Jon

Test Drive A One Show Pencil

Agency: Boone Oakley

Because your work for Long's is going to kick One Show ass, right? Take a look at this site. I got all the way up to the point where they asked me for money. I'm not going to buy an award, even if it's only temporary and I get my money back. Not to gloat, but I've won my fair share of ad metal in my day, but I'm still fed up with this self-congratulatory part of our business (And that does not excuse you from entering! I'll be posting a list of upcoming award shows). So, go ahead and give the One Show your credit card number and please let me know how your experience was. Because I honestly do not think the experience would be worth it. -Jon

Assignment Five 11/4: Portfolio Site

Hi Class,

A portfolio site is crucial for any advertising professional. Just think. No more paper cuts. No more all-night book-making marathons. No more money going to ink instead of to your stomach. Amaze creative directors with your Web savvy and throw a simple link to your work around like it's nothing. Of course you should always be choosy who you send it to;-)

Your fifth and final mission for Beyond Banners is to create a portfolio site. The minimum site should be in HTML but if you feel confident you can do it in Flash. Keep in mind that you can simply put Flash components into your HTML site. Creating your site entirely in Flash has it's drawbacks. We'll discuss more in class.

For the final class, all of your work created in this class should be featured on your site. And most importantly, LIVE.

Here are some portfolio site examples for reference:

Brandon Levin was a classmate of mine. He created this site before he left school and landed a job at RPA in Santa Monica and is now an Art Director on the show South Park. This is his brain.
http://www.brandonsbrain.com/

Jason Zada is the founder/ECD of EVB here in SF. His site is a mix of HTML, CSS, Flash, and a bit of JS i believe.
http://www.jasonzada.com/index.html

Alicia Kawamura is an MFA in Advertising major where? In the school you go to. She hasn't even graduated and is kicking ass in online. Plus she has a site any professional would be jealous of.
http://www.aliciasbook.com

Peter Crosby is an writer/ACD with whom i worked at Ogilvy. His site is actually a blog. All HTML.
http://www.crosbyreport.com/blog/thecroz

Ryan Cochrane was my partner beginning at AKQA and then at Ogilvy. He refers to it as an arranged marriage. Then one day he switched to writing copy and we had to get a divorce. Ryan is now at Freestyle Interactive. All HTML.
http://www.ryancochrane.com/

Michelle Hirschberg is a writer at Goodby, Silverstein. I worked with her at AKQA. She's the brain behind Doritos' Hotel 626. All HTML site.
http://www.thinkmichellethink.com

We'll find more examples in class.

Where's George?

I stumbled into Taqueria Cancun on Sunday to satisfy my belly with a burrito and ended up going home with George. For those of you who were at the 1000 Journals event at school last Tuesday, you might recall that wheresgeorge.com is one of Brian Singer's favorite viral/online projects. It's one of mine as well. 1000 Journals Project Event 10/28

Getting a user to interact with your banner is cool. Getting the world to interact is even better. Tuesday class will be going offline so we can gain insight into Brian Singer's 1000 Journals Project. He'll be giving a talk in advance of his SFMOMA exhibition. You can't get anymore interactive than this.

Class is from 6:30pm to 9:30pm tonight. Let's meet in the library.

Tuesday, October 28th, 6:30 - 8:00pm
Academy of Art University Library
6th Floor,
180 New Montgomery St, San Francisco

About 1000 Journals:

One thousand journals are traveling from hand to hand throughout the world. People who find them add something (anything) and then pass them along in an ongoing collaborative art project.

The journals have traveled by air, sea, and land throughout 40 countries and all 50 states. They've been the subject of treasure hunts, hidden in remote caves, abandoned at airports, left in the lost and found, and stolen at gunpoint. The project has been covered extensively in the media, including the San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Entertainment Weekly.

Brian will be available afterwards for Q&A, and to sign his book. More information about the project at: www.1000journals.com

Glen Sheehan of T3 Comes to the Academy

Glen was my Executive Creative Director at AKQA here in SF. He has since moved on to T3 in Austin, TX. He's a great guy and a champion of his creatives. If you want to know why I am so hard on you guys, come meet Glen. He made me realize what was truly expected of me when I was at your level and just out of school. He brought out the best in me. I can only hope to do the same with all of you. Thanks to Nick for the tip.-Jon
