1000 Journals Project Event 10/28

Getting a user to interact with your banner is cool. Getting the world to interact is even better. Tuesday class will be going offline so we can gain insight into Brian Singer's 1000 Journals Project. He'll be giving a talk in advance of his SFMOMA exhibition. You can't get anymore interactive than this.

Class is from 6:30pm to 9:30pm tonight. Let's meet in the library.

Tuesday, October 28th, 6:30 - 8:00pm
Academy of Art University Library
6th Floor,
180 New Montgomery St, San Francisco

About 1000 Journals:

One thousand journals are traveling from hand to hand throughout the world. People who find them add something (anything) and then pass them along in an ongoing collaborative art project.

The journals have traveled by air, sea, and land throughout 40 countries and all 50 states. They've been the subject of treasure hunts, hidden in remote caves, abandoned at airports, left in the lost and found, and stolen at gunpoint. The project has been covered extensively in the media, including the San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Entertainment Weekly.

Brian will be available afterwards for Q&A, and to sign his book. More information about the project at: www.1000journals.com

Glen Sheehan of T3 Comes to the Academy

Glen was my Executive Creative Director at AKQA here in SF. He has since moved on to T3 in Austin, TX. He's a great guy and a champion of his creatives. If you want to know why I am so hard on you guys, come meet Glen. He made me realize what was truly expected of me when I was at your level and just out of school. He brought out the best in me. I can only hope to do the same with all of you. Thanks to Nick for the tip.-Jon

Winner Of The 1st Annual Beyond Banners Viral Video Fest

17th October Bigg Boss 2- Special with bunnies by Dhruvi

With over 1500 views, Dhruvi broke out ahead of Dana in the final hours of this well-fought contest. I personally liked "Bunny Sex" as the title. But that's just me. Award ceremony will be Oct. 21. And remember, there is no prize for second best. So, the rest of you are losers. This time. -Jon

Assignment Four 10/14: A Widget

Build a widget for Election Night '08. (We're sure you all can come up with something better than the above)

We live in a democracy. A free country in other words. You are free to do whatever you want with your widget. I think Monica told Bill the same thing in the oral, I mean oval, office. But don't quote me on it. Your widget must at minimum have some sort of live RSS feed. Your widget does not have to be right leaning, or heaven forbid, left. You can frame it however you want.

Example: your widget could have a feed of the latest vote tally.

Your widget will need to be ready to distribute to your friends' desktops by Election Night Nov. 4th.

WE DON'T WANT TO SEE A COUNTDOWN.

10 widget concepts for next class, 10/21.

Below are resources you'll need. We will go over them in class.

This Harley site might be the best thing since leather chaps.

I like the way they create a real experience for the audience that looks so real. It's not use an animation as the others. You also be a part of the trip by choose many detail in that. Even it's not like a mini game that you can play but I think it make people feel and see the real experience. Hope you guys enjoy it too.-nickie

Hello Sour Sally is a site for yogurt product. The illustration style is cute. You also can control the character inside like a small game. The way they made for visitors to interact with is impressive.

National Debt Clock Runs Out Of Digits

Guys, I just had to share this with you. It's not an ad or online experience, but it's digital nonetheless. I'm a great lover of irony.

Get the story here, then laugh your asses off (Especially our International students. You are so lucky you have your countries to go back to. I'm stuck here)
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/10/08/national/a174517D30.DTL&tsp=1

My favorite, favorite excerpt form the story:
"...the digital dollar sign on the billboard-style clock near Times Square has been switched to a figure — the "1" in $10 trillion."

God bless America. -Jon

VW Worsens The US Economic Future By Engineering A Baby Boom.

Not sure how I feel about this yet. And I'm not sure why that is. Maybe because I've never seen this strategy before? Is it too fresh? It's a fun premise though. And it's the perfect tongue n cheek humor that their demographic loves. So tell me this. If German Engineering is causing a baby boom, then what is the birth control? American Engineering? Take a spin around the site and form your own opinion.-Jon

Jon Gives EA FIFA 09 A Yellow Card

Hey guys,

Take a look at the launch site for EA's FIFA 09. I was letdown. We are greeted with a beautiful panoramic view of the stadium and then all this crap loads on top of it. Just when you think you will get a better experience by clicking on a floating panel, all you'll get is an enlarged Gif and upon click it takes you to a completely different page. If I was a soccer ball, I'd be deflated right now.-Jon

Dork Dodging at its finest. Or dorkiest.

Kulika rocks out with Nokia.

This is one of my favorites. You can choose what's kind of music that you like and also can put yourself in it. It working pretty fast so you don't have to wait that long to see yourself in it. I really have fun to see myself in different kind of music. Hope you guys will enjoy it too.

Here is a microsite for a game. The animation is kind of cool but too long. For me, it looks too advertising. It also has some small games can play between the animations.

Get to know the green fairy.

New york agency Decon (Not sure why they'd want to be named after mouse poison) launches a site for Swiss Absinthe maker, Kübler. I'm a bit underwhelmed to be honest. When you hit a link in their menu, the entire site refreshes. Would have been a more cohesive and elegant experience if just the content inside the wooden border changed. Anyway, we want to hear from you.
